Can someone please explain this option select to me?

I posted this question in the Adon forum, but that forum seems to be on its deathbed these days, so I figured I'd post it here to get more than one response. I've been watching some old GamerBee matches and came across this one against Sabin at Seasons Beatings. I hear Chris Hu and James Chen going on about how it's an "option select" but I don't see it. It doesn't seem like an option select to me (where you input a move right after your first input, so that if the first move whiffs, the second will come out, otherwise you can continue with your string - right?)

I'm pretty sure they're suggesting it happens around the 4:51 mark. I think they're suggesting that the whiffed njHK, which lead to crLP LP is an option select. Is it really? Immediately before, he did pretty the same move, but the njHK connected and he still did the crLP LP for a full combo.

Oh and immediately after that when the round is ending, James Chen is talking about a "safe jump roundhouse, uppercut". Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see a safe jump set up at all, it just looked like GamerBee was just doing some a couple of njHK 'randomly'. Hmm... maybe two neutral jumps are actually safe?

Edit: Sorry for the double video post - this new forum isn't the best for editing your posts.

From what I can see, what they're referring to wasn't an option-select.  If it was, then Gamerbee fucked up the execution.  They're probably referring to basic safe-jump with an uppercut option-select.  If they block the jump attack, your uppercut doesn't come out, and you can proceed to do another attack string.  If they use a reversal move with invincibility, then Adon will immediately land and go into an uppercut, which beats out Dhalsim's options.

Commentators continually make shit up to sound smart. Don't take what they say as gospel. A lot of the high level players just have the ability to eye ball and punish better because they have god like reactions.

Unless it's Zhi. He's the one of the few that knows his shit.

Neutral jumps on wake up usually do lead to safe jumps though. So they may be implying that whatever gamerbee does in that situation it's safe from reversal. I can't watch the vid right now.

This video gives a "clear" demonstration of option select. Don't take what others say serious. If you have any doubts, try it out yourself in training mode.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I wasn't so sure if what they were saying was accurate, that's why I thought I'd bring it here to go over and analyse their commentary, I figure either way I'm going to learn something new.

I didn't know that, is there any specific timing involved in that or just do it as soon as you knock them down? Gonna go and try and see if I can find it now in the training room.

Well I only play Fei Long. But we have a safe jump from a back throw, dash up, neutral jump that beats 5 frame reversal. Most characters can set up safe jumps from either forward or back throws on 4 or 5 or above frame reversals.

I'd be surprised if Adon didn't have something similar since his game is very throw heavy. I think Adon has the same as Fei Long but from a forward throw.

There's a safe jump thread in the Adon board at the top. I just had a look. Remember timings are usually quite strict though.

Oh yeah, I'm aware of the safe jump from throws, I just thought you/the commentators were referring to safe jumps from knockdowns (probably sweeps) that are just neutral jumps, rather than the 'traditional' method of safe jumps.

Technically safe jumps are a type of option select.

A safe jump can be neutral or forward? I don't get what you mean.

Safe jump can be any kind of jump.  The type of jump isn't important.  It's all about the timing of the jump.

What I meant was, I am familiar/accustomed to safe jumps being executed from forward or back throws which then leads into a up-forward safe jump. I have undoubtedly seen, but never realised that a safe jump could also be done vertically. I actually thought and had read that it was unsafe - but it must be situational and dependent on the set up and the timing.

A type of option select you say? Hmm... I guess they are!

Yeah like I said they usually involve very strict button combinations done in sequence. I know Adon has one because I was playing an Adon player today with my Sagat and he used that neutral jump safe jump on me.

You see Adon players use that shit to finish the round a lot actually, neutral jump safe jump (blocked) into immediate instant overhead. Very derpy but it usually works.
